So we received an email a week or so ago from friends of friends who went through the same thing we are with Maggie. The email has been very helpful. One of the most pertinent things they said was that everyone says having a preemie is like a roller coaster, there are ups and downs, but they said it's more like a flight; there's a beginning and an end but you can't see the turbulence in between. On a roller coaster you can at least see the drops.
Maggie is going back on some antibiotics (ventimycin and gentimycin). Her platelet count was a bit low and she was producing some immature white blood cells, so they prescribed the poorly spelled antibiotics above as a precautionary measure to fight any possible infections.
The Neonatologist said that most babies who have infections are lethargic and not very mobile. Maggie has been kicking away and grabbing wires so the doctor thought this a very good sign.
We are definitely learning just how much we don't know about preemie development, looks like I need to do some reading.
To conclude on a happier note, when I entered the NICU today one of the nurses asked "what happened to Mr. GQ"......ok you can stop laughing, no really stop laughing. Apparently I've been wearing lots of suits lately so she thinks I am a fancy dresser. Just wait till she sees my formal T-Shirt collection, maybe I'll bust out my "GO PRE" shirt this weekend.
