Just a couple of things we've been told by the nursing staff that I thought I'd pass along:
1. They have advised us not to buy tons of preemie clothing. As you can see in most of the pictures due to the amount of wires/tubes, Maggie has been just in a diaper. Clothing in the NICU tends to be ripped, torn and stained. Also Maggie will start growing (hopefully sooner rather than later) and she'll start catching up to the bigger babies and their sizes.
2. We should be using pretty much non-scented everything (laundry detergent, soaps etc). They don't want to worry about anything that interacts with Maggie having a strong scent or odor that possibly she could be aggravated by. And for Maggie's clothing we can't even use dryer sheets; another battle lost to static cling.
Another interesting thing, I must say this blog has been very helpful to us, not only in getting the word out, but helping us keep track of treatments. I was able to consult the blog a few times the last couple of days when the staff at Childrens asked when she went on certain treatments at St. E's, when she had transfusions etc.

I offer two pieces of advice in terms of laundry- 1st- instead of dryer sheets pour a little white vingear in either a downy fabric softener ball, or in the fabric softener thing on your washing machine. It washes away completely, but helps keep clothes soft fights static.
ReplyDeleteAlso, we switched a while ago to green laundry detergent (laugh away), it works just as well, is great for sensitive skin and comes in unscented. (although the scents are so light they don't stay on your clothes. The link is: http://hyenacart.com/CrunchyClean/index.php?c=9
Hope this helps!
