Little bit of a setback today. It seems that Maggie is suffering from a bit of Acidosis. Acidosis means the acidity in her body is a little high. This is due to the fact that her kidneys cannot regulate the acidity levels in her body, due to the fact that they are not quite mature. To treat the doctors will prescribe sodium bicarbonate which should bring the levels in line. The drawbacks to the treatment are that it may cause Maggie to lose the CPAP and become intubated again. This is not ideal because she has been doing a "fantastic job" (Doctors words, not mine) breathing on her own with the CPAP. Going back on the respirator is not ideal, but possibly a necessary evil.
The acidosis is just an example of the hurdles we will face over the next few weeks as Maggie's body just isn't mature enough to handle the challenges she faces ex utero.
In more positive news, the waiter at the Vietnamese restaurant we have been frequenting near the hospital has Sue's order memorized, it's only a matter of time before she can order the "usual".
